Finding Freedom in the Cross and the Truth of Who You Are in Him

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Have you ever carried something for so long that you forgot it wasn't yours?

At first, the weight is obvious.

Your shoulders ache.

Your steps become slower.

You notice every ounce of the burden.

But after enough time passes, something remarkable happens.

The burden begins to feel normal.

You stop questioning whether you were ever meant to carry it.

Instead, you simply learn to live beneath its weight.

I wonder how many of us do the same thing spiritually.

Some carry guilt.

Others carry shame.

Some carry responsibility for things they could never control.

Others carry labels spoken over them by wounded people many years ago.

The burden may have different names.

But the result is always the same.

It slowly convinces us that it belongs.

Yet Jesus offers a different invitation.

"Come to Me... and I will give you rest."

Notice what He does not say.

He does not tell us to become stronger.

He does not tell us to carry the burden more faithfully.

He tells us to bring it to Him.

Why?

Because some burdens were never ours to carry.

The Difference Between Conviction and Condemnation

One of the enemy's greatest strategies is not always temptation.

Sometimes it is confusion.

Especially confusion about guilt.

The Holy Spirit lovingly convicts us of sin.

His purpose is always restoration.

He shines light on what is true so that we may repent, receive forgiveness, and walk in freedom.

Condemnation works differently.

It whispers accusations without hope.

It magnifies shame without offering grace.

It continually points backward instead of leading us toward Christ.

Scripture assures us:

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Romans 8:1

If a voice continually tells you that you are beyond God's mercy...

that you are permanently stained...

that you can never be whole...

that voice does not come from your Heavenly Father.

Jacob Carried the Weight of His Own Choices

Jacob had real sins to confess.

He had deceived.

Manipulated.

Taken what did not belong to him.

When he came to Jabbok, he wrestled honestly with God.

He could not move forward until he faced the truth.

God did not minimize Jacob's past.

Neither did He imprison him in it.

Instead, He gave him something entirely unexpected.

A new name.

Israel.

Notice the order.

Truth came first.

Then grace.

Then identity.

God never intended Jacob to spend the rest of his life answering to the name "deceiver."

The Burden I Was Never Meant to Carry

For many years, I found myself doing something very different.

Jacob confessed sins he had committed.

I confessed sins I had never committed.

As a child, I experienced sexual abuse.

Like many survivors, I carried a crushing sense of shame that did not belong to me.

I loved the Lord deeply.

I wanted to please Him.

So I prayed.

Repented.

Confessed.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Not because I had knowingly rebelled against God.

But because somewhere along the way, I had come to believe that what had happened to me must somehow be my fault.

The burden became so familiar that I no longer questioned whether it belonged to me.

I simply carried it.

Until one day...

the Father gently spoke truth into the deepest place of my heart.

He helped me see what I had never understood before.

I had been asking forgiveness for something that required healing, not repentance.

What freedom flooded my soul that day.

Not because I suddenly understood everything.

But because the Father lovingly removed a burden He had never placed upon me.

Many Burdens Wear Different Names

Perhaps your burden is different from mine.

Maybe no one abused you.

But perhaps someone rejected you.

Perhaps you have carried the blame for a broken marriage that was never yours alone.

Perhaps you still answer to words spoken over you decades ago.

Failure.

Unwanted.

Unlovable.

Too much.

Not enough.

Those burdens may have been handed to you.

But that does not mean they belong to you.

The enemy delights in attaching false identities to wounded hearts.

Jesus delights in removing them.

The Cross Changes Everything

When Jesus stretched out His arms upon the cross, He carried more than our sins.

He carried our shame.

Our grief.

Our sorrow.

Our brokenness.

Isaiah prophesied:

"Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows..."

Isaiah 53:4

Think about that for a moment.

If Christ has already carried it...

why are we still trying to?

The invitation of the Gospel is not merely forgiveness.

It is exchange.

He takes our ashes.

He gives beauty.

He takes our mourning.

He gives joy.

He takes our condemnation.

He gives righteousness.

He takes the burdens that crush us...

and gives us Himself.

Laying It Down

Freedom rarely begins with understanding everything.

It begins with surrender.

The day I finally laid down that false burden, nothing about my past changed.

The abuse did not disappear.

The memories did not vanish overnight.

But the weight did.

Truth has a remarkable way of lifting what shame has buried for years.

Perhaps today the Father is asking you one simple question:

"What burden are you carrying that I never asked you to carry?"

Sit quietly with Him.

Let Him answer.

You may discover that the burden you've called "mine" has never belonged to you at all.

A Quiet Prayer

Father,

Search my heart.

Reveal every burden I have been carrying that You never intended me to bear.

Where I need conviction, give me the courage to repent.

Where I have lived under condemnation, give me the courage to receive Your truth.

Teach me to distinguish Your gentle voice from the accusations of the enemy.

Thank You that Jesus carried every burden necessary for my redemption.

Today I choose to lay my shame, my fear, my false identities, and my striving at the foot of the cross.

Teach me to walk in the freedom You have already purchased for me.

In Jesus' precious name,

• Can I distinguish the Holy Spirit's conviction from the enemy's condemnation?

• What false identity have I been answering to for years?

• What truth from Scripture speaks directly to that lie?

• What would it look like for me to leave this burden at the feet of Jesus today?
